Game Changer 5: Digital Fabrication

Richard Lum | 10/07/2019

This week, we look at Digital Fabrication (making stuff with the help of computers and machines) as part of our series on Game Changers with the potential to have a huge impact on the future for health and well-being. My team at Vision Foresight Strategy, LLC and I conducted a Futures Scan in the first half of 2019, and we uncovered 72 trends and emerging issues. Some shared themes emerged among many of the trends and emerging issues, and we synthesized them into nine big Game Changers.

Trends are changes over time that we can already measure.

Emerging Issues are potential trends—they haven’t happened yet, but we can detect faint signs that they could be on the horizon.

The ability to use machines to design and build individually, precisely, and quickly could transform how we create and consume goods in everyday life. It has special implications for health, with the possibility of things like making customized artificial organs and generating on-demand medications. Will it fulfill its potential to spread medical advances far and wide, inexpensively?
