Game Changer 2: Synthetic Biology

Richard Lum | 09/16/2019

Today, let’s continue our nine-week journey through big Game Changers that FORESIGHT’s futurists (myself, Wendy Schultz, and our colleagues at Vision Foresight Strategy, LLC) uncovered so far in our Futures Scan. As I explained in last week’s blog post about Environmental Breakdown, we constructed these Game Changers by combining related trends and emerging issues (from the list of 72 we found in our scan) and considering how they might play out together in the real world.

Trends are changes over time that we can already measure.

Emerging Issues are potential trends—they haven’t happened yet, but we can detect faint signs that they could be on the horizon.

Our Game Changer video this week highlights Synthetic Biology and how our growing mastery of genetics and advances in technology now allow us to edit genes. On the bright side, this could end diseases previously thought incurable, or lead to a new golden age of medicine personalized to each person’s DNA. Unfortunately, it could also spell disaster for our ecosystem. A big question of FORESIGHT, remember, is: what can we do today to shape these opportunities in the right direction?
